The "English major" in me enjoys Sally's earthy, sometimes expansive anecdotes and the cantankerous wit woven into so many of them. And gems like "Beans are very forgiving" as the opening paragraph of a concise one-page set of tips on storing and preparing these too-often-trivialized but vital legumes. And under Garden Salad, "Lettuce is washed and broken into pieces small enough for me to get into my mouth without seeming like a caveman." The strict plants-only eater in me salivates for Beans & Swiss Chard Stew, Butternut Squash Rounds, countless others. Serious health recommendations not typically heard at your doctor's office also impress, like recommending plant foods, not dairy, for calcium, and healthful carbohydrates -- "a banana over a candy bar, an apple over a cookie, ..." -- under Seasonal Affect Disorder, no less! This cookbook is at least as much of a treat as its best recipes.
