Nobody Told Me This Was Coming

This week I went to an event at Jenni Kayne’s beautiful West Hollywood store for a conversation around hormonal change.

Jenni moderated a panel of experts that included my friend Jennifer Weiss-Wolf, whose latest book, When in Menopause: A User’s Manual and Citizen’s Guide, just came out.

Jennifer was one of only four witnesses invited to D.C. last month for the first-ever congressional hearing devoted to menopause.

The first ever.

And it wasn’t just a talk. Members of the committee are now pushing to identify the gaps in menopause research and care.

Jennifer is a fierce advocate for women’s health, research, education and policy, and I can’t wait to dive into her latest book.

I only wish I had this kind of information when I was 45.

By 47, I was running from doctor to doctor trying to figure out why I was inflamed physically, mentally and emotionally.

When you don’t understand what’s happening, it can be really hard to trust what your body is telling you, especially when your body is suddenly changing.

Lately, I feel like Tim Allen in the movie Santa Clause when he wakes up, turns sideways in the mirror and gasps!

Where did the jelly donut around my middle come from?

Is that why my feed is filled with women over 50 weight training?

As estrogen declines, we can lose muscle and bone more quickly, which is one reason strength training becomes so important.

I dusted off my three-pounders and recently graduated to the five-pounders.

I’m still keeping my popcorn and dark chocolate.

What are you keeping and letting go of?

I reply to all responses—share what you’re learning or doing to stay strong in all the ways.

With Love,

Sally
