How to receive more without doing more

One short story. One insight. One quote.

My daughter and I were having a big conversation recently about a decision that would change her life.

She’s 28.

Early in the conversation, I told her, “I trust you. I know you’re making the best decision you can with what you know right now.”

And I meant it.

But I also had my own life experience to share, so I shared it.

We went back and forth for a few days.

At one point she said, “Mom, I hear you. I don’t want any more feedback. I just need you to

listen.”

Finally, I said, “You’re right. I trust you. I’m here.”

And this time, I kept my heart open and really listened, without judgment.

She shared more.

A few days later, I was with a group of girlfriends and told them what had happened.

One of them said, “By fully receiving, she gave you more.”

I haven’t stopped thinking about that.

The more I received, the more I was given.

As women, I think we become so accustomed to giving that sometimes we forget how to receive.

To really receive someone means staying open to what they’re giving us, even when it isn’t what we expected or what we would choose.Because the moment I decide what the outcome should be, I’ve already limited what I’m able to receive.

My daughter didn’t take my advice.

And that’s okay.

Her life is hers to live.

And mine is to love her, trust her and stay open to what she shares with me.

Maybe receiving is a little like watering flowers with a garden hose.

The water is already flowing.

We just have to stop squeezing the hose.

Quote of the week

“The more open you are to receive,

the more you are given.”
